Outreach

The Jewett lab enjoys lending a helping hand to the Northwestern and greater Chicago communities by participating in a number of activities. Lab members volunteer for the the annual Biotechnology Symposium and Biotechnology Day. Lab members also volunteer for the the annual HerStory event at the Chicago Field Museum. The Jewett Lab takes part in Career Day for Girls, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) High School Initiative Program, Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, and many other outreach activities geared towards sparking interest in STEM for K-12 students. Also, the lab each year mentors K-12 teachers through lab activities and research in collaboration with the Northwestern Office of STEM Education Partnerships (OSEP) Research Experience for Teachers Program. Many lab members mentor high school students with science fair projects through Northwestern’s Mentorship Opportunities for Research Engagement (MORE). Whether it involves experiments in the lab or lectures outside of the lab, the Jewett lab finds a way to get involved with the community.
